I would like to cordially invite a new series to this blog. May I present, One Good Thing. Every so often a post about One Good Thing will appear because we all have space for a few more good things. This year has been hard for the world, so I'd like to help everyone take one moment, or one breath, where they can appreciate a single nice thing.
Today, in the midst of the #BLM movement across the world, at least one good thing has happened: a huge portion of the white population has started learning and listening. New acronyms, words, and phrases (BIPOC, White Fragility, Toxic White Feminism, etc) and their multilayered definitions have entered the lexicon of the privileged. New petitions have been signed and donations are being made. But most of all, the privileged white portion of the population has realized that we will never understand what BIPOC people live every day. I say this as a white, cisgender, heterosexual woman who is in the middle of deep learning and self-evaluation in this area: we have finally realized that we will be lifelong learners but absolutely never can be experts. Appropriately, this should leave many of us speechless and leave space for listening, so one day, there is a chance that more of us can be true allies. The cyclical empowerment that occurs when we realize we have (in many cases have always had) the tools to learn how to empower others will achieve huge change, I hope. This is one good thing this week.
